Historical Landmarks

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (formerly known as Aurangabad) is a major city in Maharashtra, India, and the administrative headquarters of the namesake district. Renamed in 2022 to honour Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire, the city is widely regarded as the “Tourism Capital of Maharashtra” due to its proximity to world-renowned heritage sites

Ajanta Caves
(World Heritage)

Located about 100 km from the city, these 30 rock-cut Buddhist caves date back to the 2nd century BCE. They are globally famous for their stunning murals and frescoes that narrate the life of Buddha.

Ellora Caves & Kailasa Temple

A masterpiece of monolithic architecture, Cave 16 (Kailasa Temple) is the world’s largest structure carved from a single rock. The site features 34 caves representing Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions.

Bibi Ka Maqbara ("Taj of the Deccan")

Built by Prince Azam Shah in memory of his mother, Dilras Banu Begum, this 17th-century mausoleum is the city’s most iconic Mughal landmark. Its white marble dome and charbagh gardens mirror the Taj Mahal.

Daulatabad
(Devgiri) Fort

Known as the "Unconquerable Fort," this 12th-century citadel features a complex defense system, including the famous dark "Bhulbhulaiya" passage. It briefly served as the capital of India under Muhammad bin Tughluq.

The 52 Gates
(City Identity)

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar is historically known as the "City of Gates". Key gates like Bhadkal Darwaza (the oldest), Paithan Gate, and Delhi Gate each have unique stories that define the city's fortified identity.

Panchakki (Medieval Water Mill)

A 17th-century engineering marvel, this water mill used an underground clay pipe system to channel water from 6 km away to power a flour mill for pilgrims. It highlights the city's advanced hydrology history.

Aurangabad Caves

Often overshadowed by Ajanta and Ellora, these 12 Buddhist caves are located right within the city on a hilltop near the university. They offer panoramic views of the city and intricate carvings of the Vajrayana tradition.

Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

Located near Ellora, this is the 12th Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. The temple was rebuilt in the 18th century by Ahilyabai Holkar and is a major spiritual landmark for the city.

Soneri Mahal

A golden-painted Rajput-style palace built by Pahad Singh, it now serves as a state museum. It houses ancient artifacts, weapons, and sculptures found in the region.

Pitalkhora Caves

These are the oldest rock-cut caves in Maharashtra, dating back to the 2nd century BCE. Set in a lush valley with waterfalls during the monsoon, they represent the earliest Buddhist architecture in India.

Khuldabad Heritage

The "Heavenly Abode" houses the Tomb of Emperor Aurangzeb, which is uniquely simple and roofless. It also contains the tomb of Malik Ambar, the city's founder, and the Bhadra Maruti Temple.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum

This museum preserves the legacy of the Maratha Empire with exhibits of war weapons, ancient coins, and armor. It is a vital site for understanding the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the region.
